Farmhouse style family room ideas?
We had some pretty big plans for the space – a bit of paint, changing out that old fan, adding some wood planks to the walls…
And well, moving the light to the centre of the room, re-drywalling the entire ceiling, tearing down and rebuilding an entire wall…
All in just six weeks.
It was a lot to take on in such a short amount of time. Turns out a bit too much actually. Just two short weeks ago , we were feeling entirely defeated. Pulling this all together in time was looking nothing short of impossible…
And then, my knight in shining armour arrived with his trusty sidekick to save the day (read: my sweet Uncle and cousin)!
Less than three days later, they had the room looking like a room again!
It was just the push we needed to get over that I’m so overwhelmed I don’t even know where to start hump and hubs and I powered through the rest of our long list in just more than a week.
Honestly, I still can’t believe it!
This One Room Challenge may have only been six weeks long (or two for us, but who’s counting?). But friends, I’ve been waiting ages for this cozy farmhouse style family room …
I can’t wait to tell you all about how we created this beautiful space!!!
Once we found ourselves with four walls and a ceiling again (read more about that story here ), I couldn’t wait to bring a bit of character into the space with some planked walls (you can find that tutorial here ) and some farmhouse style trim ( another tutorial here ). And, because this family room has always been one of the darkest rooms in our home, I decided to paint everything white to keep it all feeling really light and bright.
Now, I’m not a big fan of the laminate flooring, but we’ve decided to live with it until we’re ready to work through the rest of our main floor so that we can tie it into the hardwood flooring we’d intend to lay throughout. Instead, I brought in a bit of warmth and texture with a chunky jute rug from Rugs USA.
We went to great lengths to move the light from the back corner of the room to the centre of the space and of course cover that awful popcorn ceiling while we were at it. I absolutely adore this rustic light from Wayfair.ca and really think it looks so perfect in the space!
Now, y’all know how much I love soft, neutral colours … but friends, I just couldn’t resist adding this fun accent wall that I painted out to look like a vintage chalkboard! Thanks to this brilliant paint roller from HomeRight , I had the whole thing painted out in just minutes!
And how gorgeous does it look with that wood barn style sliding door hanging in front it!!!
Once we made it through the hard part – you know construction, drywall (and all that darn dust that comes with it), and of course the hours and hours of painting … I couldn’t have been more excited to finally start moving in the furniture and decor accessories. Styling the space is always my favourite part of any room makeover – it’s truly when the space comes to life.
Now, there’s no doubt that the star of the show here is definitely that gorgeous sectional from The Brick!
There’s nothing like custom made furniture to really make a space your own, so when I found out that The Brick offers custom designs that are manufactured right here in Alberta, I couldn’t resist creating a custom piece that would perfectly suit our needs in the space.
I loved having the chance to choose the style, configuration and even fabric to create the perfect piece for our family!
And I have to say, this beautiful sofa totally exceeded my expectations! The fabric is timelessly classic and it’s just so comfy to curl up on!
Especially piled high with these luxurious pillows from Tonic Living (hello velvet!) and a few super cute designs from So Vintage Chic !
And I couldn’t resist adding a matching ottoman to the mix – it’ll be perfect to pull up around the coffee table for a bit of extra seating when we need.
I am head over heels in L-O-V-E with that beautiful trunk table sitting in the middle of it all!
I picked it up at The Brick because I adored the rustic style and actually intended to leave it as it was, thinking that the dark colour would bring a fun contrast to the space. But, at the last minute, I had a total change of heart and decided to paint out the bottom and refinish the top to lighten things up a bit.
I think it turned out so perfectly!
Keeping with the farmhouse feel of the space, I chose to go with this beautiful TV stand and the matching bookcase , both from The Brick as well.
The rustic details add some lovely character and the light colours of the wood fit the space perfectly!
And can we just stop a minute and chat about that ahhhhhhmazing new TV?! Hubs is over the moon to have finally replaced the old relic that we’ve had since first moving in together 10 years ago. Considering we have just the one TV in our home, we really wanted to make it count. I think we totally knocked it out of the park with this incredible television from The Brick!
Okay, all television gushing aside, clearly we needed a few other things to look at in this space as well. I’m so excited to have this incredible custom piece from local sign shop, William Rae Designs !
I think it really stands out with those rustic lanterns hanging on either side of it!
And Courtney, the owner was SO sweet that she let me grab a few extras from her workshop while I was there too (it took everything I had not to walk away with one of everything!). So, I hung a few sweet signs over the bookshelf as well…
And of course, what farmhouse style family room would be complete without a ginormous, rusty metal clock? I hunted high and low for months for the perfect one, so you can imagine how excited I was when I came across this beauty at Urban Barn (and for 20% off, now tell me that’s not meant to be!).
I think it’s so fun to pair the soft, vintage elements with the more industrial or rustic – I love, love, love how pretty these simple lace curtains look hanging from the new curtain rod we created with galvanized pipe.
Finally, a few old windows and candlesticks piled on top of the fireplace later, we had ourselves a finished space!
Honestly, I still can’t believe we made it through this one. What an absolute whirlwind it’s been, but as always, it was totally worth every stressful minute, every late night and every up an down along the way.
Just look at how far we’ve come!
