Do It Yourself Drop Cloth Curtains In The Sunroom

DIY drop cloth curtains - A simple & easy way to add farmhouse and cottage style curtains to any room on a budget! A great pin for farmhouse and cottage style decor inspiration!

This weekend was all about bringing in some cozy texture into our sunroom, and we did it all on a budget. This weekend we added these DIY Drop Cloth Curtains into our sunroom space. I know this room is all about the view & up until now I was nervous to add curtains, but it was time to cozy up this space a little more because that’s what I do. You see, in every other house we have owned I have always used DIY curtains made from drop cloths . I even blogged some last year in our last house [here] if you want to see those. It’s just something that I have always done. In this house we haven’t really gotten to the window treatment stage yet because it’s completely under construction. Except our sunroom. we haven’t really ripped up that room yet & we sit there a whole lot. When we moved in it already had pull down shades in this room, but I rarely used them even though they were very nice. I’m not sure if it was the unexpected snow we got this weekend after 70 degree days we’ve had, but I instantly wanted to cozy up the sunroom a little bit more. I wandered down to my local Home Depot & picked up some drop cloths and went to town in the sunroom filled with windows…

Preparing the drop cloth

So we first bought our drop cloths like these ones that I listed an affiliate for [here] & these solid wood drapery rings [here] . I started by washing the drop cloths & drying them thoroughly so that they would soften & get that more vintage linen feel. Also, so they would smell better, I suggest using a fabric softener when washing them to really get that drop cloth smell out & to make them extra soft & easy to work with. After the curtains are all dry I lay them the floor & see how much they shrunk by holding them up to the window where I want them to hang.

Customize your curtains to your style and fit

You can choose to hem them at this point, but let’s face it I’m all about that quick DIY project sans sewing. I lay the curtain on the ground and fold over the top of the curtain and clip the curtain rings at the fold & hang them on the rod so that it has a ruffle and so the curtains don’t puddle too much on the floor. After they are hung I take a handheld steamer to release and crazy wrinkles, but some wrinkles are ok in my book because I love the relaxed look of them. Super simple!

Our curtain rod

I chose to use the Martha Stewart curtain rod system in white. It is all wood and I’m really happy with how it turned out. You can find the whole system at Home Depot, but I also found it on Amazon here: curtain bracket [here] , curtain rod [here] , curtain rings [here] , & so much more. I LOVE that the curtain rod blends in with the trim in the sunroom. We were going to go with industrial pipes that were black, but at the last minute I switched it up and went with the white wood rods. The white rods blending into the trim still draws your eyes out the windows instead of distracting from the view.

I still have to take the shades down in the room, but one step at a time right? More on that later
